Transplant reciepient in 1996, in rejection, age 53, minimum 7 yr wait for cadaver donor, 6 months away from dialysis.

How do you approach your family and friends about being a living organ donor. Biggest fear is if they say no, I’ll feel guilty for having asked or if they say no the relationships change.

Late response here, Sorry. Finding a Donor, That was a big fear for Me to say the least. I used this Blog as a “soft marketing” tool to keep friends and posted on my current ( and correct ) status and symptoms. I emailed the Blog link to about 40 people and posted it on My facebook as well. I’d like to say that’s what did it, and maybe it helped, but I’m sure it was my Wife who is responsible for getting the ball rolling by emailing and phoning our friends and family. When someone would express any interest we’d be quick to discuss it further with them. It was suprising who comes out of the woodwork at times. I didn’t need it, but the Kidney social worker at my hospital said he could help with contacting family and writing a letter etc to try to find a donor.

Bottom line though, when people became aware of my/our situation ( via Email from my wife or this Blog) we were approached by several people about whats required. We had looked into it 1st so we were ready for questions. I hope this helps. Good luck to you and hang in there. It must be strange to be going through the process again. I’, hoping to have a good run on my new Kidney, the creatinine numbers are about double ( but stable) what they should be at 5 months after transplant, I’m feeling Amazing though and the kidney is doing everything else well so we’ll just be thankfull and enjoy the ride.
